Cooler Master Tempest GP27U – Mini-LED For Under $1000
160Hz 4K IPS With DisplayHDR1000 And Quantum Dots
Shopping for a display with a Mini-LED backlight and and a Quantum Dot filter is an expensive proposition, especially if you are looking for one with adaptive sync. The flat 27″ Cooler Master Tempest GP27U bucks that trend, available on Amazon for just over $900. It sports a 576-zone mini-LED backlight, quantum dots and is both G-SYNC and Freesync compliant, with a peak 1200 nits brightness and a 1ms response rate. The colour gamut is also amazing, managing Adobe RGB 99% and DCI-P3 98% in testing.
The refresh rate is a bit of a question, as it is advertised with a 160Hz refresh rate but also specifies 144Hz under the adaptive sync section. This might help explain the flickering KitGuru noticed when both HDR and adaptive sync were enabled. Cooler Master assured them there is a firmware fix on the way to address this issue, but you should certainly be aware of this before investing your hard earned money into the Tempest GP27U.
The back of the monitor is almost as impressive as the front, including a KVM thanks to a USB Type-B upstream port and two Type-A downstream, a Type-C port with DP Alt support, a single DP 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 ports. Apart from the flickering issue, KitGuru gives the Cooler Master Tempest GP27U high marks across the board. You might want to wait for the firmware update though.
The Tempest GP27U is a clear step up for Cooler Master however, with this display offering a 4K/160Hz IPS panel, enhanced with a Mini-LED backlight that offers 576 dimming zones.
