CES 2024: AMD Announces Radeon RX 7600 XT with 16GB of VRAM
More Memory, Higher Clocks, Same GPU
AMD is set to release a 16GB version of their Radeon RX 7600, though it will not be called “RX 7600 16GB”. No, this is the rumored RX 7600 XT, and to help justify the “XT” in the name this new model also offers higher GPU clock speeds. Unfortunately, those are the only two improvements. If you were hoping for more shaders or more memory bandwidth, you will be disappointed.
Let’s take a look at AMD’s comparison slide with the original Radeon RX 7600 and the new RX 7600 XT:
Here we see the same 32 CU configuration as the original RX 7600, with a Game Clock increased from 2.25 GHz to 2.47 GHz – a 9.78% increase, and a Boost Clock raised from (up to) 2.66 GHz to (up to) 2.76 GHz – a 3.76% increase. The memory is identical, other than capacity, with a 128-bit bus and 18 Gbps speed.
It remains to be seen if there is any additional headroom for overclocking, but this relatively minor GPU clock increase – along with the doubled VRAM – has raised the Total Board Power from 165W to 190W, and necessitated a second 8-pin power connector.
As to pricing, here is AMD’s official slide:
A $60 premium for double the VRAM and higher clocks seems like a good deal to this editor, but you’d have to be fine with the original card’s $269 USD price tag. Raising things up to $329 places this new card in direct competition with some excellent RX 6000 Series options such as the RX 6700 XT, with new cards still available at places like Newegg for less than the asking price of this RX 7600 XT.
As usual, we will see how the market responds. It goes on sale from AIB partners (there will be no reference card) on January 24.
