It is going to be hard for Microsoft to flog its new OS when notebook manufactures are not interested in selling touchscreen notebooks. Apparently the idea of greasy fingers obscuring your view of Metro just hasn't caught on as was predicted by the GUI geniuses behind Win8. Though DigiTimes does not specify which vendors are abandoning touchscreens, first tier vendors include all of the names you are familiar with. The decision is financial, not spiteful, as a touchscreen does add around 10% to the cost of producing a notebook and as no one is buying them it is foolish to continue to produce them.
"Some first-tier notebook brand vendors have recently adjusted their notebook roadmaps for 2014 and will delay the releases of touchscreen conventional notebooks to focus on non-touchscreen models, which have a pricing advantage, according to sources from the upstream supply chain."

Convertibles. Laptops are not
Convertibles. Laptops are not for touch. Why move your hand so far away from you body when you can use the keyboard, the mouse or the touchpad? You want to add touch to a mobile device. Make it a convertible and sell it as 2 in 1. Are they really so stupid that they have to produce real models that everyone knows they will fail in the market? A few million dollars in the dustbin for something that everyone can easily guess? Make a convertible that in tablet mode will default in Metro and when you connect a keyboard will change aromatically in desktop mode. Then go to the bank with a smile.
I have 2 touch screen laptops
I have 2 touch screen laptops (one's a convertable) and a desktop (no touch-screen), all running windows 8.1. Windows 8 or 8.1 is usable without a touchscreen, but a touchscreen makes it much easier and makes for a better experience. I know about the shortcut keys (windows-x and window-c) and they make it much easier on my desktop, but on the laptops, the touch adds an entirely new element.
My wife especially likes the touchscreen with Windows 8 and her coworker even bought one after seeing her's in action.
As for the convertible, it is hit and miss. Its nice to be able to flip it into a tablet-like device, but sometimes the device is quirky – screen will blackout for an elongated period of time, the system may power off entirely, etc. The point of this is that a multi-purpose device usually is able to do things ok, but is not a master of everything…
No make a convertable that
No make a convertable that runs a simple NON TIFKAM OS (any other small device OS, but windows 8), android will do, when the device is in tablet mode, and when the device is in desktop/keyboard mode runs windows 7 (and/or any other OS but windows 8), and treats the tablet part as a LCD/OLED/display! Not to difficult to do, and you have a dual OS device, with the productivity of windows 7(by actually running windows 7, and/or any other OS but windows 8) and a tablet that actually has a future, and plenty of non M$ RT based android apps! Then M$ will not be able to break your Bank, and you really smile, and dance that snoopy happy dance!
well if the win 8 os could
well if the win 8 os could really run on a mouse and keyboard like win 7 did it would be fine. but to have to depend on shortcuts – sorry people don’t.
power users do but mainstream does not. win 8 is a tablet interface, needs a touchscreen. of course i am talking of the metro/modern part of it,
the other side (desktop) well that was welded on, and sure if you know the shortcuts and all the executable’s on your system you will be fine.
but i’ll wait for the next version see what shows up…
M$ ? people still do this?
M$ ? people still do this? blast from 95.
why not g$$gle or a$$le ? amaz$n ? does hating on MS still earn you nerd geek points or something?
M$ = very short way of
M$ = very short way of writing the company name, with the $, instead of S, so the people will see that M$ is a monopoly, has been for some decades now! M$ should have been broken up, like the Trusts of the past were! It is good for the economy to break monopolies, competition is Good, monopolies are bad! Monopolies stifle innovation, and in M$’s case cost enterprises billions in unnecessary retraining costs, by M$ using its PC OS monopoly to shove its TIFKAM appStore/runtime/bloatware closed app ecosystem onto 3rd party OEM hardware, and onto pc users, enterprise and consumer! When I buy a laptop/pc from a third party OEM, I expect the OS on the third party OEM made laptop/pc to serve me, and not M$! I do not buy Apple, beacuse of the closed ecosystem, so what gives M$ the right to turn my 3rd party OEM laptop/PC hardware into a closed ecosystem useless and unproductive Tool for M$’s profit. At least Apple is not pushing its closed software ecosystem on any hardware, that Apple does not directly manufacture and sell! I buy my hardware from ASUS, HP, etc, they are not M$ owned, M$ is just a parts supplier of the OS, do any of HP’s, etc. other parts suppliers have the right to control and profit from me directly, no! If I buy my laptop from HP then let M$ get its profits from its OS sales to HP, just like any other OEM hardware supplier does, HP profits form me buying its product, only one time, when I orginally purchase its Laptop/PC product, and any time afterward any more purchasing is up to completely my discretion! M$ does not have the legal right put an App Store, virtual, or otherwise, on my third party OEM manufactured hardware, that belongs to me, without my direct permission! M$’s TIFKAM and its complete runtime/app store/closed ecosystem will never be welcome on any of my PCs or laptops! I will never buy a M$ branded Laptop/PC/Tablet/Phone, I buy 3rd party OEM only, and any closed ecosystems are a NO SALE!
NO SALE………well i guess
NO SALE………well i guess you will soon be buying NOTHING. because all of your best friends are heading directly down that path.
except linux? yea ok you can install linux on your computer phone and game console and ummm dooooooooooooooooo everything?
Apple is not pushing a closed eco system? that would be because they NEVER EVER EVER EVER pushed for an OPEN ecosystem dum dum. They have been closed from the start, only closing down more each year they gained their strength back.. go ask psystar.
You still think MS is some kinda monopoly? yet you have google apple colored glasses on?
you’re high, on your own hot air.
