When you deal with the web, almost nothing is hidden. The browsers (and some extensions) have access to just about everything on screen and off. Anyone browsing a site or app can inspect the contents and even modify it. That last part could be key.
TechPowerUp got their hands on a screenshot of developer tools inspecting the Newegg website. A few elements are hidden on the right hand side within the "Coming Soon" container. One element, id of "singleFinalPrice", is set "visibility: hidden;" with a price as its contents. In the TechPowerUp screenshot, this price is listed as "729.99" USD.
Of course, good journalism is confirming this yourself. As of the time I checked, this value is listed as "9999.99" USD. This means either one of two things: Newegg changed their value to a placeholder after the leak was discovered or the source of TechPowerUp's screenshot used those same developer tools to modify the content. It is actually a remarkably easy thing to do… here I change the value to 99 cents by right clicking on the element and modifying the HTML.
No, the R9 290X is not 99 cents.
So I would be careful to take these screenshots with a grain of salt if we only have access to one source. That said, $729.99 does sound like a reasonable price point for AMD to release a Titan-competitor at. Of course, that is exactly what a hoaxer would want.
But, as it stands right now, I would not get your hopes up. An MSRP of ~$699-$749 USD sounds legitimate but we do not have even a second source, at the moment, to confirm that. Still, this might be something our readers would like to know.
Sorry, but this news is over
Sorry, but this news is over a week old. I’ve seen here last week.
http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/radeon_r9_290x_now_also_listed_at_newegg_for_729_99.html
But then again you got a website like:
http://www.geeks3d.com/20131009/amd-radeon-r9-290x-and-r9-290-more-specs-and-slides/
Saying it’ll be $649 for the 290x and $499 for the 290.
Ah interesting.
Ah interesting.
@ Ophelos ,It might be a week
@ Ophelos ,It might be a week old, but its an update. Newegg now putting it at $999 is a joke on their part.
And yeah Scott..I would love have it at .99 Cents too!! If my memory is correct, the reviews should be out on the 15th , this Tuesday?..maybe. If so, Ryan should be Frame Raping the heck out the 290X and the 290 now. Im anxiously awaiting!
Why do you have a picture of
Why do you have a picture of yourself drinking a coffee? What are you, Paul Thurrott or something? Weird old people on the net make me LoL

don’t think AMD will get away
don’t think AMD will get away with 730$ for this card.
Depends on if it is, in fact,
Depends on if it is, in fact, higher performance than a Titan.
If it scales performance same
If it scales performance same way as 680 vs. 7970 vs. Titan, then it won’t beat Titan.
680 was on par with 7970GHz (1536 vs. 2048)
While Titan destroyed both.(1536 vs. 2048 vs. 2688)
It’ll be 2688 vs. 2816 (delta only 128 shader units)
Although it assumes any tweaks available are within this range.
The 290X is a new
The 290X is a new architecture thus doesn’t provide any basis to do a comparison based on the number of shaders in the 7970. And of course Titan used a different architecture from the 680…
From a strict
From a strict compute-performance (which is pretty relevant for shader-bound games) perspective, the 290X is about ~1.1 teraflops faster (theoretical) than the Titan. Less memory, though (4GB vs Titan's 6GB).
Hey Scott, do you remember
Hey Scott, do you remember when
A) year over year graphics performance increases were close to doubling?
B) improved graphics performance came at a lower cost
At this rate, in 10 years we will have graphics cards that are maybe 3-4 times faster, for about $4,000 per card.
Once again AMD fails to act competitively and ruins the entire industry. Every time they have a part that they THINK doesn’t suck complete and utter ass, they price it to the moon, as if they’re a premium brand or something.
Remember the 900 dollar FX9590? The 650 dollar 7970 with BROKEN crossfire, which isn’t universally fixed to this day? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
TLDR Fuck AMD
Eh? nVidia is the company
Eh? nVidia is the company that prices outragously, hence a 999$ Titan 6-months after release.
Okay nvidia, is time to go
Okay nvidia, is time to go home now. :3
Too bad it looks like we
Too bad it looks like we won’t see anything near as much of a value as my 5870 was at launch anytime soon if ever again. Brand new top of the line in a new design and only $379.
gtx670 when it was released
gtx670 when it was released was 399$ that was great value IMO. If you grabbed the gigabyte windforce version which sold for same price, got a card with like +200mhz overclock from base and was almost silent while doing it.
You’re comparing apples to
You’re comparing apples to oranges here, the 5870 is nominally the equivalent of the equivalent of the 280X which is available for $299.
I’m still rocking my HD 5870.
I’m still rocking my HD 5870. What an amazing card … three years later and it still blows away numerous modern games. I was able to crank up almost everything in Tomb Raider at 1920×1080 and still got about 50 FPS on average. I sure wish we could see a value like the 5870 again. The price of GPUs has become fucking absurd.

directdial.com removed a listing for the 290x for the same price.
AMD is just trolling. They want people to say: I won’t buy it at that price. It comes out, beats the titan and is >600$. Insta buy.

“instabuy”?
If you have 600 bucks worth of disposable income to throw at a graphics card, that’s the point at which you’re no longer looking at AMD. Kind of like once your income is over a certain level, voting Democrat is just not something you do.
Face it, AMD is cheap crap for low budgets. When they make something amazing, which only happened once or twice, they price it to the moon. See the thousand-dollar Athlon-FX, and a couple of graphics card releases, most recently and notably the 7970 which cost quite a pretty penny when it paper-launched.
instabuy. LOL
