Introduction and Specifications
Asus puts a new spin on the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT graphics card by including a nifty little overclocking tool – a dial on an external drive bay that also displays temperatures and frame rate.
On April 17, NVidia added a couple new graphics processing units to their GeForce 8 Series product line. The G84 and G86 GPUs target budget-minded users who want to take full advantage of DirectX 10 and Vista as well as give them a decent performance boost during gaming.Ever since these graphics chips have been released, vendors have been working hard to push their versions of these video cards onto the market. Most manufacturers are focusing on overclocking the GPU and memory past NVidia’s reference specifications, but others are taking a different approach.
One such company is ASUS and their EN8600GT OC Gear 256MB PCI-E video card. The EN8600GT is pretty consistent with other 8600GTs, but ASUS’s version has a slight wrinkle to it. ASUS is bundling a 5.25″ LED display with the video card to put all the card’s GPU and memory information at the gamer’s fingertips. This is a pretty significant enhancement that should provide overclockers and other enthusiasts the data they need to squeeze a few more frames out of their EN8600GTs. ASUS has also put together a unique software package that we will discuss in more detail later in the review.
