It's time for the PCPer Mailbag, our weekly show where Ryan and the team answer your questions about the tech industry, the latest and greatest GPUs, the process of running a tech review website, and more!
On today's show, with most of the PCPer crew in Vegas for CES, our very own Josh Walrath steps up to the plate to tackle your most pressing questions:
00:30 – Improving CPUs & Ryzen Refresh?
04:04 – Spectre/Meltdown vulnerabilities an opportunity for AMD?
06:23 – What's next for CPUs after the nanometer shrink race?
09:18 – Will Apple ditch Intel for its own Mac CPUs?
10:58 – Cheap racing wheel recommendation?
12:21 – Racing games that Josh is looking forward to?
13:25 – Why does high resolution display scaling in Windows suck?
14:37 – Why isn't Josh at CES?
15:27 – What's up with joshtekk.com?

Please remember that AMD said
Please remember that AMD said near zero for Spectre var 2. They now have decided to patch that anyway to be safe. For Meltdown AMD is not affected.
Sure AMD’s Zen Processors
Sure AMD’s Zen Processors have less issues but look and most brick and mortar based retail electronics outlets they only have Intel laptops mostly and very little if any PCs with AMD’s processors.
I’m waiting for the first the Linux laptop OEMs to begin offering AMD’s Zen/Vega Raven Ridge APUs so I can solve most of the Meltdown/Spectre CPU and OS as a spyware issues with windows 10. And I’ll probably be waiting for a long time owing to the material support that the Linux laptop OEM’s recieve from Intel to keep those insecure Intel CPUs/SOCs inside the Linux PC/laptop Offerings.
I think that AMD’s is missing out on a Linux Laptop market that’s going to experience a growth spert as it gets closer to 2020 and windows 7’s EOL, and AMD needs to provide material support to some Linux laptop OEM to get its Zen/Vega APUs inside of some Linux based laptops and net 3 birds with one stone. Owing to the relative size currently on the windows 7 market share even after almost 3 years with windows 10(given away for free) that shoud be an indicator of the potential demand for Linux OS based OEM laptops as some of those windows 7 users will not be going beyond 7 in 2020. And those windows 7 diehard users would like there to start being some AMD Zen/Vega Raven Ridge APU Based Laptop Offerings from the Linux laptop OEMs.
And the PC market(1) is not growing and even Gartner is getting their resoning wrong for any potential bright spot as there are people that do not want a 15 Watt underpowered laptop they are looking for some 35+ Watt laptop as a desktop replacment options and are not finding anything but thin and limp 15 watt laptops as the take it or leave it option.
I really do hope that ASUS will begin offering some desktop Raven Ridge APU SKUs inside of a beefy laptop options like ASUS did with that Ryzen 7 1700, so I can get a real laptop as a desktop replacment. I’m also looking at some Mini-Micro desktop offerings that have just been annonced with Desktop Raven Ridge APU options on some bare bones offerings where I can build out the remainder on my own and install Linux and be ready for beyond 2020 and the post Microsoft period.

Josh,
Ryan needs to send you
Josh,
Ryan needs to send you a g-sync monitor to test. That’s lame that you’ve yet to be able to test one yet.
They are hoarding them in Ky!
You’ll never go back after
You’ll never go back after the experience though! That’s the downfall.
No disrespect intended toward
No disrespect intended toward Ryan though. Just saying. He’s the Boss man.
This is a late addition to
This is a late addition to the mailbag, but I wanted to ask a question about Samsung and their GDDR6. If Samsung is entering mass production would this mean that partners would have had time to sample some of these chips already? If so I’d assume Nvidia would of got their hands on a sample and we could then theoretically see the announcement of the 2080/1180 (whatever) around GDC in March, with a potential launch in mid-April, what do you guys think?
