Crypto Is MANDATORY
Resistance Is Futile
Ubisoft NFTs appeared in Ghost Recon Breakpoint as Ubisoft Quartz and were pretty much universally despised. The Quartz Digits were offered to players for free, as long as the player met certain criteria such as level and could be sold to other players on two NFT markets, Objkt and Rarible. Those names make as much sense as Ubisoft’s idea, as evidenced by the fact that only dozens out of the thousands of Ubisoft NFTs were successfully sold since launch.
The only reasonable response to this utter and complete failure is obviously to double down on it by trying to force more NFTs down players throats; at least if you are Ubisoft. As Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovations Lab VP Nicolas Pouard famously stated, “So, it’s really, for them. It’s really beneficial. But they don’t get it for now.” and has nothing to do with their customers legitimate belief that “gamers really believe it’s first destroying the planet, and second just a tool for speculation.“
This means that no matter that NFTs in games are even worse than loot box gambling, and less popular to boot, they will remain and Ubisoft’s next games will incorporate them.
Not to be outdone by Ubisoft, Meta is also doubling down on an idiotic idea. The original Facebook Libra, later known as Diem, was a complete and utter failure unless you consider attracting the ire of both US Government and Federal Reserve a success. Meta certainly seems to be of that opinion as they are planning to introduce virtual coins which are being referred to as Zuck Bucks; because of course they are.
Meta Financial Technologies envisions creating these Zuck Bucks, as well as reputation tokens and creator coins which will not be “on the blockchain but instead “in-app tokens that would be centrally controlled by the company.” which sounds even less useful than the original idea. Then again, Robux are not a complete failure nor are hats in games, so paying real money to upgrade a Meta avatar might be at least slightly less of a failure than Libra was.
Isn’t it nice to know your feedback is appreciated and acted upon?
Billed by Ubisoft as "the first platform for playable and energy-efficient NFTs in AAA games," Quartz was originally revealed in December 2021 and was quickly met with overwhelming backlash by players. Despite this, a statement on the Ubisoft Quartz website tells players that the publisher will continue to add 'Digits' -- its equivalent of NFTs -- to future games.
