We're one step closer to the official launch of G-SYNC HDR displays with the official announcement of a release window and pricing from ASUS for their PG27UQ 27" G-SYNC HDR Display. While the Acer Predator X27 was put up for pre-order last week and is set to ship on June 1st, this is the first indication of release details we have for the ASUS PG27UQ.
ASUS is touting the PG27UQ as the first "gaming monitor" to achieve VESA's DisplayHDR 1000 certification. While we've seen the announcement of another DisplayHDR 1000 monitor, the Phillips Momentum, it comes in at a TV-sized 43 inches.
DisplayHDR 1000 certification is achieved through the utilization of a 384-zone 1000cd/m2 peak brightness backlight as well as a quantum dot layer which allows the IPS panel to support 97% DCI-P3 and 99% AdobeRGB color gamut.
The PG27UQ also features ambient lighting controlled by their the ASUS Aura Sync software. A built-in ROG Light Signal will allow users to cast the ROG logo on the wall behind their monitor if they so choose.
The ASUS PG27UQ will be available in North America for a price of $1,999.99 starting in late June 2018.

There really isn’t a “choice” between FreeSync and GSYNC right now. If you have AMD, you can only use FreeSync. If you use Nvidia, you can only use GSYNC. GSYNC is also superior to FreeSync. If you have no idea what the value of Quantum Dot, HDR, FALD, and GSYNC all working together is, this monitor isn’t for you. This is for people who pay $6k+ for TVs with Quantum Dot and FALD. Not everyone needs to be able to afford every product. Stick to your economic power range.

IPS is always in the ballpark of 1000:1. It’s not capable of any more, and none of these gimmicks are going to fix that. Dynamic contrast ratios are meaningless marketing

Sure, quantum dots can help
Sure, quantum dots can help with color gamut, but you can’t get a high dynamic range without good contrast, and HDR is just a standard (and a very low one at that); it doesn’t help contrast if the panel isn’t capable of displaying black. Local dimming IS dynamic contrast, because it still says “we can get good black levels if we turn off the backlight, but then everything in that area is dark”. The only difference is that it’s a moderate area instead of the entire screen, and now you get even more uniformity issues than LCD usually has. Unless every single pixel has its own dimming zone, fixing contrast issues with local dimming is like treating a bullet wound with a bandaid.

Well, it’s not ideal like having OLED with Dynamic HDR and content that is encoded for Dynamic HDR but I assume it’s the best we can do practically.
OLED is still unsuitable for desktop monitors due to image retention (not burn-in) so until they solve that and possibly other issues (not aware of any except perhaps cost) then QD+IPS+FALC might be the best you can expect right now.
AFAIK these are the best gaming monitors. So we can complain they could be better or just enjoy what we have (if you can afford one that is).
Plus I’ve heard excellent reviews already about this in Youtube videos… it’s better than what I have now so I plan to get one.

Also, just FYI but 27″ is perfect for me. I’m sure 32″ would be perfect for others and I’m sure 32″ with similar specs is coming.
Also, you have the density incorrect. It’s not zones per screen square area that matters but rather zones per the area in your VIEWING ZONE.
You’ll sit back further from a 65″ HDTV than you will from 27″ desktop monitor… so not only is the observed screen size SMALLER with a 65″ HDTV there are also more zones so the density is much higher.

I’m assuming that’s a BANDWIDTH reason but DSC allows for plenty of bandwidth so where is this info coming from?
DP1.4 using DSC (Display Stream Compression) which I’m sure the monitor would support allows up to 4K at 240Hz… not sure if that’s based on 4:2:0 or what, but that would be more than enough bandwidth to support HDR at 144Hz.
So can you guys CONFIRM THIS with Asus, Acer or NVidia?
