BitTorrent is good for more than just downloading files of various natures, it has a tool called Sync which performs a similar task to solutions like Dropbox only more privately and apparently with more speed. From the graph below you can see that in at least one scenario BitTorrent Sync is significantly faster than other solutions when it is allowed free reign on your connection, you can limit the speed in the settings if time is not of the essence. What is also very important to note is that this is purely an encrypted client to client transfer, your files are never cached on a server for posterity or for 'quality assurance' as they are when you use the competitions software. That does mean both devices need to be powered on and on the network for this to work but for many the privacy would be worth the slightly less flexible operation. Check it out on Slashdot.
"Now that its file synchronization tool has received a few updates, BitTorrent is going on the offensive against cloud-based storage services by showing off just how fast BitTorrent Sync can be. More specifically, the company conducted a test that shows Sync destroys Google Drive, Microsoft's OneDrive, and Dropbox. The company transferred a 1.36 GB MP4 video clip between two Apple MacBook Pros using two Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapters, the Time.gov site as a real-time clock, and the Internet connection at its headquarters (1 Gbps up/down)."

BTSync seems too good to be
BTSync seems too good to be true. Unfortunately its not open source, so i dont trust them a 100% when it comes to security.
I hope they will make it open source because it is the easiest to use and most advanced “cloud” solution right now.
except its not cloud… its
except its not cloud… its your computers and data, syncing with whatever other computers you want.
Heck i use it just to keep my desktop sync’ed with my home server on a LAN.
its handy.
Have you tried the Windows
Have you tried the Windows client of BTSync?
It’s total POS, missing feature, not all features working. Pre-alpha at best.
They need more than speed to fix that.
I’ve been using it on 4
I’ve been using it on 4 Windows computers for various folders. The main strength is really the LAN performance. The speed is just so much faster than all competition, if they come close to be qualified as competition. It suits home use scenario perfectly.
The weakness is stability, since it’s still Beta software. I recently had an issue where two read-only peers somehow prevents two read-write peers from syncing. Definitely a bug somewhere. It also relies on timestamp to heavily, resulting in weird behavior for TrueCrypt containers.
I hope their final product will be better. It’s quite promising and attractive to me, because I always have one computer online, so it effectively cuts the middle cloud out for my local data. They do reply to every feedback I’ve submitted. I think they are quite serious about BTSync.
I don’t trust Bittorrent
I don’t trust Bittorrent company. They are too happy to collaborate with MPAA and the like for my taste. This means that I worry about privacy of my data when using this service. I am looking for cloud sync that will be encrypted on my side with key known only by me, otherwise no thanks.
I don’t trust them, I LOVE
I don’t trust them, I LOVE the idea just not the company behind it.
