Raspberry Pi Gets A Big Slice Of Sony’s Investment Budget

If You Guessed It Was For AI Applications Give Yourself Extra Dessert

Raspberry Pi Ltd have secured an unknown amount of money from Sony Semiconductor Solutions to expand the tiny computer’s abilities to handle AI applications.  This is not the first investment Sony put into Raspberry Pi, they have been backing the not for profit for a few years now with both cash and production technology.  This has really helped with the supply of these boards, though demand continues to outstrip production, especially now that businesses are scooping them up to be used in manufacturing and controllers.

Enthusiasts have already been using their Raspberry Pi build for AI applications, especially in visual system.  OpenCV, aka Open Computer Vision is a popular, albeit somewhat frustrating, application which can enable your Pi to perform image recognition.  This new round of investment includes access to Sony’s Aitrios platform, which will give Raspberry Pi devices the ability to talk to IMX500 imaging sensors.  That will greatly increase the ability of the device to perform visual learning tasks.

Keep an eye out to see how this story develops.

The extent of the funding was not revealed, but Eben Upton, Raspberry Pi's co-founder and CEO, said that the firm raised the cash at the same $500 million valuation it was worth in a 2021 funding round, when it brought in $45 million.
