And It’s A Lot Better Than Todd Howard’s Advice

Our friends at MAINGEAR haven’t just been designing systems to play Starfield, they’ve also been playing it.  That inspired them to write up some tips to get better performance from Starfield on your current machine, though they wouldn’t mind at all if you were to pop over to their store to buy one of their high end machines.  If you pick up one of their Ryzen/Radeon powered systems like the MG-1, R1, Turbo or Rush you’ll get a Starfield code with your new system.

Regardless of your budget, or lack thereof, these are quick and easy tips to get a better experience when plying the skies and the land.

The first set are fairly obvious, but how many times has overlooking the obvious lead to problems later on?  The second tip is perhaps the most important as you can see for yourself at Rock, Paper, SHOTGUN.

 

1. Keep Your PC Updated: Outdated drivers can lead to game instability and crashes. Prevent these issues by regularly updating Windows and your drivers to the latest versions. You can update Windows through the “Windows Update” menu. For NVIDIA graphics cards, use the “GeForce Experience” app. For AMD processors and graphics cards, utilize the “Adrenaline” software. If you have Intel processors and graphics cards, go for the “Intel ARC Control” software or the “Intel Driver and Support Assistant.”
 
2. Choose a Swift Storage Drive: Given the massive size of modern games, especially titles like Starfield, they demand significant storage capacity. Optimal performance comes from a larger capacity and faster read/write speeds, so we recommend using a fast NVMe solid-state drive (SSD) for the best experience. .
 
3. Minimize Background Tasks: Running multiple background tasks like old browser tabs, email clients, and other programs can hinder in-game performance. To maximize system resources for gaming, eliminate unnecessary tasks or limit them to essential applications like Discord.
 
The second set of tips deal with in game settings which will help you squeeze out a few more frames from Starfield.   The use of FSR now, and DLSS in the near future lets you keep your graphics options high, while not destroying the overall look of the game by using a low resolution.  You will notice that they don’t mention the crowd setting in their tips, as others have also proved the number of people wandering around has next to no impact on performance.
 
1. Leverage Upscaling: To enhance performance on older hardware or higher resolutions, consider lowering your Render Resolution setting to 65-75% and enabling FSR 2 upscaling with a sharpness level of 80-90%. This will significantly boost framerates without compromising visual quality.
 
2. Adjust Lighting and Shadow Settings: Starfield offers an array of resource-intensive lighting and shadow settings. Reduce settings like Shadow Quality and Volumetric Lighting for a substantial performance improvement with hardly any noticeable impact on visual quality.
 
3. Disable Dynamic Resolution: For a consistently top-tier visual experience, disable dynamic resolution. While this may cause a slight framerate dip in specific situations, it ensures a visually immersive journey as you explore the galaxy during those lengthy gaming sessions.
 
Hopefully some or all of these tips will be useful for your system as you continue your quest or if you will just be jumping into it for the first time.  I may be feeding my door opening kink with the early access version of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord that just appeared.
 
The original RPG that birthed the entire genre has been given an Unreal new look, but it still runs on the original Apple ][ code.  The memories of my younger brother, my dad and I all playing the original on an Apple ][e are coming back in a big way; contra-dextra avenue!
